I know a few folks who are pregnant right now, and as it is the holiday season, I am sharing my favorite go to book for families expecting a new sibling: “Julius the Baby of the World” by Kevin Henkes.
For those of you not familiar with this Madison author, you are missing some great reading. Not only does he write (and illustrate) magical and dynamically engaging characters, but in many cases creates plots that tackle the very real issues that crop up in childhood: starting school, making friends, giving up a blanket, and in this book, gaining a new sibling.
Lily is featured in several other books as well, and in each has an outgoing personality and direct way of dealing with life. Her views on the arrival of her new brother are ones many of us have witnessed or experienced; and the change of heart when adjusted to this major life change sincerely endearing. This book is uplifting to any young child who may be experiencing trepidation about the recent addition to the household as it is realistic and humorous which yields a relatable tale for all.
